RAW PUMPKINFOR DOGS
With Halloween looming and the prospect of loads of pumpkins being hollowed out for the festive decoration, have you thought about what to do with the flesh other than to throw it away?
This can be used as a healthy addition to your pets diet, loaded with fibre, raw or cooked fresh pumpkin and pumpkin seeds have many benefits for your dog.
Raw, organic pumpkin seeds works as an effective deworming agent against tapeworms and other intestinal parasites. This is because pumpkin seeds contain the amino acid cucurbitin which paralyses and eliminates the worms from the digestive tract.
Pumpkins also contain essential fatty acids that are important for healthy skin, hair, nails, brain function and development. They also promote a shiny coat and prevent skin conditions like dryness and eczema.
Pumpkin is also full of Vitamin C which help improve your pets resistance to infection and also contains beta-carotene which supports eye health and helps prevent macular degeneration.
If you need to take some weight off your pet, try pureed pumpkin, it is very filling yet low in calories making it an excellent diet aid. Replace a portion of their food with the pureed pumpkin.
Pumpkin flesh is easy to puree in a blender making it easier to mix into your pets diet or if you prefer to buy it canned (which is just as good) make sure it’s organic and doesn’t have any added sugar.
Obviously, should your dog have any serious illness’s like kidney disease or diabetes, always consult with you vet prior to changing their diet.
