During the summer temperatures can soar to heights which can cause dogs heat stress and other physical harm, some permanent or even fatal. PLEASE be aware of your dogs wellbeing and follow our quick guide on how to keep your dog safe in hot weather.

How to spot heatstroke

Heatstroke happens when your dog is no longer able to regulate their body temperature and is one of the most common illnesses in dogs during warm weather.

Symptoms include;

excessive, vigorous panting and drooling
agitation
dark red stick/tacky gums
vomiting or diarrhoea and weakness

If left unchecked, heatstroke can be fatal.

If you suspect that your dog may be suffering with heatstroke, please take them to a vet immediately.

Walks

In hot weather, only walk your dog in the early hours or late evening and certainly not in the middle of the day, when the sun is at its strongest and the pavements will be red hot. Dogs’ footpads easily burn on hot roads, pavements, and even sand.

Walk – don’t run: In very hot, humid weather, never exercise your dog by running or cycling while they try to keep up. Your dog will collapse before giving up as they can quickly become severely overheated.

Keep your dog indoors: Dogs sweat through their footpads and cool themselves by panting. Soaring temperatures can cause them heat stress and be physically damaging and even fatal.

Never leave your dog in a parked car

Never ever leave your dog in a parked car in warm weather, even for short periods with the windows slightly open. Parked cars are death traps for dogs in warm weather. Dogs can can succumb to heatstroke within minutes when trapped inside a parked car, even when parked in the shade.

Keep your dog hydrated

Dogs need to drink plenty of water during warm weather to prevent dehydration. Providing lots of fresh, clean water, at ALL times, is essential, whether at home, in the garden or out on walks.

Encourage your dog to drink more by playing with garden sprinklers and making pet friendly ice lollies and adding some ice cubes to their drinking bowl. Invest in a travel water bowl so that they have something to drink while out and about.

Ways to keep your dog cool in the summer

provide plenty of fresh water at ALL times
do not allow your dog to lie out in the full sun
stand the dog in cool/tepid water
wipe the dog’s paws, abdomen, armpits and neck with a wet cloth, refresh and repeat.
use a fan/air con
invest in a cooling mat for them to lie on
